Vanilla is so much more than just a tasty ingredient to flavor your foods. It’s one of the many foods that I regularly use as a medicine in our house. And one of its most frequent medicinal uses is to cure tooth and mouth pain. Since I’ve had such great luck using it in my house, I’m excited to pass on what I’ve learned about using vanilla extract for tooth pain.
How can vanilla relieve my toothache?
Vanilla extract contains alcohol, which can help temporarily numb the areas around your teeth and gums to ease your pain. But that’s not the only thing this popular extract has to offer. Vanilla contains an oil called Eugenol. This oil contains analgesic properties, so it works even harder to rid you of those oral aches.
How do I use vanilla extract for tooth pain?
Using vanilla extract is a piece-of-cake (though not nearly as tasty on its own!). Just dip a q-tip into the extract and then blot on the painful areas in your mouth. It may sting a bit, just for a second. But don’t worry – it goes away fast and you’ll be breathing a sigh of relief in no time!
If q-tips aren’t stocked in your house, try dipping a small piece cloth and dabbing onto the area, as mentioned above. An old rag or corner of washcloth works perfectly. And if you’ve got a little one with teething pains, this remedy will work safely for them as well. A teething toddler can easily gum a washcloth dipped in vanilla extract, or you can apply to their gums with a q-tip, as suggested above.
Does it matter where my vanilla comes from?
It’s important to find a source for your vanilla extract that you can trust, with ingredients you don’t have to lose sleep over. I’ve had a lot of success with Bakto’s Pure Madagascar Vanilla Extract. But if you don’t want to buy it, you can make it yourself with Alix’s easy instructions. I’ve started whipping up my own in large batches every few months and I am loving the homemade version the best!
Just be sure to purchase real vanilla extract (not imitation) if you plan to use this food ingredient as a medicine. The only thing imitation vanilla is good for is imitating flavor.
