Welcome to the first official installment of Kids Thoughts, our newest addition to the blog where our youngest homesteaders, Nikolas and Brandon, will be sharing their stories and experiences. Today, Brandon shares his story about an accident in the barn that could have been avoided!
I was chasing Nikolas in the barn. I chased him until something stuck in my foot. I cried very loud when I saw a pitchfork. Mom ran and pulled out the pitchfork. It hurt worse than ever.
Mom cleaned out my foot and then dad drove me to the hospital. My foot got cleaned again and the doctor wrapped a bandage around my foot. I got crutches. I had seen many people with crutches before and knew just how to use them. I didn’t wear a shoe on that foot. I would sometimes have trouble with the crutches and step on my foot.
Whenever people saw me, they were curious and wanted to know what happened and said, “What happened? How did it happen?” so then I told them the story.
“Ouch! It must have hurt! Good thing it wasn’t broken,” they would say. But it really did feel broken!
One lesson I learned from all of this is that you shouldn’t run in the barn, especially without shoes! If you do that, the same thing could happen to you. There is something else you can do to keep something like this from happening to you. When you’re done with the pitchfork, don’t just drop it on the floor like I did. Put it away!
Have you ever gotten hurt on the farm or learned a lesson the hard way?
