The life of a homesteader is anything but easy! While living this lifestyle is truly fulfilling, it’s not a life for the lazy. In the midst of all that hard work, it’s important to find a reason to smile and find happiness. Since I have countless reasons to smile everyday, I thought I would share just a few of them with you.
What are some things that make me smile?
Happy animals make me smile. This isn’t the first time that I’ve shared a photo of a sunbathing rabbit! And it likely won’t be the last. I love (I mean really love) watching my animals roam around, with plenty of room and lots of forage. While the majority of our rabbits are confined to a fenced in “rabbit jail” area, along with a few in cages, we do have some does that get to truly free range. This is one of those lovely ladies, taking a nice sunbath in the front yard. It makes me so happy to see my animals happy and comfortable. And I swear, they taste better raised this way too!
Making our own hay is a BIG reason to smile! This is the very first year that we have made our own hay. From cutting to bailing, and everything in between, we managed to do it all ourselves this year! This was a HUGE accomplishment for us. Actually, most of the credit goes to my amazing Hubby, and my ten year old son, but we all pitched in different ways. And not only did we do it ourselves, we didn’t totally screw it all up and we made enough to keep our animals bellies full all winter!
Having a tractor before the snow falls really makes me smile! This time last year, we were still shopping around for the right tractor and even tried to get through the first few months of winter with an old pickup truck with a plow. That did not work out well with our long, super snowy, UP winter! This year, I’m smiling big because the tractor is already here, and the snow blower is just a quick implement change away! If know you will be able to get out of your driveway or to the barns isn’t a reason to smile, I don’t know what is!
Having enough wood for winter isn’t just a reason to smile, it’s priceless! I am super stoked that our wood shed is filling up! While it might not look like much, the stacks are six deep and tower my 6 ft 4 in husband with ease. Considering that we officially have more wood than we did last winter (not only our first winter in the UP, but the worst one in a number of years!), I’m smiling something fierce right now. In an extreme cold climate like this one, having enough firewood can literally be priceless! To get a glimpse at our first taste of winter, check out this photo filled post from last year.
The scenery around me is always cause for a smile. Whether it be the amazing skies, beautiful colors, or simply fog rolling in across the fields, I find few things that rival the beauty around me in this amazing part of the country. Even on my worst days, all I have to do is open my eyes and look around to find a cause to smile!
What makes you smile on your homestead? Is all the hard work worth it?
